What to Bring:
Daily: Water, sack lunch, gloves, boots, long sleeve shirt and pants (some rugged terrain and barbed
wires – good to have long pants and long-sleeve shirts)
What is Provided:
Fence pliers, fence markers, buckets, water jug for refills.
Goals: Improve migration route and survival rates for big game on critical winter range by
modifying fences to be more wildlife friendly. Species benefited: mule deer, elk, pronghorn,
sagegrouse, and raptors in the Lemhi Valley near Salmon, Idaho.
Detailed Tasks:
1. Hand-remove up to 2 miles of old barbed wire fence on private ranch lands
2. Skid-steer wire-winder to remove up to 5 miles of woven or barbed wire fence
3. Modify bottom wires:
Walking along fence-lines and using clips to hand-clip wires up (so animals can pass under).
4. Removing bottom or top wire where fence has 4+ strands of barbed wire, and bottom wire is
less than 10” in height or top wire is not wildlife friendly.
5. Adding bird-anti strike markers to top of fence to prevent sagegrouse and raptor strikes (will
occur on Saturday the 15th along HWY 28).
Lodging/Camping for Volunteers:
Open camping or lodging is on your own
McFarland Campground on HWY 28 - 7 sites (location for day 3 meet)
